The Coronation of the Virgin (detail)
egg tempera on wood
This was probably thge centre panel of an altarpiece, possibly from the church of San Giovanni de'Fieri near Pisa.
The Coronation of the Virgin is the final panel episode in the story of Mary's life. After her death she ascended to heaven, body and soul, to be crowned queen by her Son. Angels sang and played music in celebration.
